German Gluhwein ("Glow Wine")

My parents just got back from a cruise on the Danube; every Christmas market they went to offered a version of this hot mulled wine treat. We enjoyed the version below when we were at home with them over Christmas; it's an adaptation of several recipes.

German Gluhwein

  • 2 c. red wine
  • 1 c. orange juice
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 1/4 c. sugar
Boil all ingredients except wine for 5 minutes. Add wine. Heat until hot; do not boil. Remove seasonings (we used a strainer when we poured the wine) and serve hot in a small mug.

~Makes 4 small servings
