We're starting off a bit more slowly (and a week later) than last year due to the cold (and rainy!) spring. But it's great to get back in the rhythm of our Thursday pick-ups with Caleb of
Colvin Family Farm. I plan to do my weekly updates again this year, and, since I'm a
virtual farmhand this year--and receiving a share in return!--I'll be a bit more intentional about posting recipes that reflect the veggies I'm getting. Normally, my update post is just a picture of the week's "haul." Today, though, I'm starting off with a picture of me and Caleb (which my 7 year old took--she did a pretty good job!)!
This year, the Colvins are giving us a box that we bring back each week (previously, we brought our own bag). I have to say:
I love the box!! I think it keeps the produce in better shape during transport than my bag last year.
So, this week, we got:
- 3 medium heads lettuce (2 green, 1 red)
- 1 big bunch kale
- 2 quarts strawberries!!
- 1 bunch green onions
- 1 bunch radishes
- 1 bag spinach
See
last year's photo of a Week 1 small share after a really warm spring. Part of following the weather and seasons each year! It's always a bit different. In fact, by
this point last year, we even had summer squash coming in! I wouldn't know those interesting details if I'd just been shopping at the grocery store.
Since I spent the day at the lake with the kids and friends, I'm pooped. The
produce has all been prepped, and I'm in the mood for something simple: the world's easiest salad with my fresh lettuce (recipe coming tomorrow), broiled chicken, good bread, and some cantaloupe for dessert. Mmmm

Great post! I'm looking forward to your recipes, Betsy! I'm so excited about my first pickup on Saturday. My refrigerator is clean, and I've been exercising my salad spinning arm. :)
Yep, love the box. This is my first year to purchase a share, and I'm sooo excited! I'm looking forward to your posts, as well--I've already learned something, keep it up! ;)
Can't wait to hear all your recipes, Lia! And Chari--glad to have you aboard.
